The word “bonus” commonly denotes a positive incentive or reward … until you add the name “Fran” and the context of the local qualifying round in the annual search for the world’s fittest athlete.
The world unleashed a collective set of expletives when CrossFit announced CrossFit Games Open Workout “13.5”, a blistering interpretation of one of the notorious “Girls” of CrossFit, “Fran”. In a sick twist, “13.5” rewarded successful athletes with more — not less — pain by extending the overall workout with the completion of a set number of Thrusters (100# / 65#) and Chest-to-Bar Pull Ups within a given time frame. To say it was awful was an understatement. Yet, EAD / CFAH Open Competitors gave it their all, with Mike Ku (77), Coach Josh (68), Wade (66), Mary Kate (55), Kim G (50) and Coach Alida (27) logging the top six scores for EAD / CFAH.
“The CrossFit Games Open provide our athletes — accomplished and beginning — a chance to put their training to the test, celebrate strengths, and isolate development opportunities. The Open is a great chance to benchmark and build,” said EAD / CFAH Head Performance Coach Jim Inman. “The entire performance coaching staff is proud of the 28 athletes who officially participated in the Open Workouts, and all our athletes who tried the workouts and started to consider ‘what if’ for 2014.
The next stop in the CrossFit Games is a series of 17 Regional competitions May 17 – June 5; qualifying athletes from the Chicagoland area will compete at Navy Pier May 18 – 20. CrossFit is currently looking for volunteers for the North Central Regional competition. The CrossFit Games takes place in California July 22 – 28.
