Q. What is the Athena Classic?
A. The Athena Classic is an all-women’s CrossFit event hosted by CrossFit Arlington Heights – Elite Athletic Development, Saturday, April 20, 2013. The event registration fee is $65 and includes a commemorative event tank top. REGSTER TODAY.
Q. When does registration open / close.
A. Registration opens at 8 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4 and closes when the field fills, or 11:59 p.m., Saturday, April 6, whichever comes first.
Q. Who is eligible to compete?
A. The field is open to fit women 18-years and older who have a competitive spirit and like to challenge themselves — we’re looking for fierce, brave, warriors. Previous CrossFit experience is helpful, but not required.
Q. What is the field size?
A. The field is limited to 80 competitors across two divisions, Open (18+) and Master’s (40+).
Q. What is the event structure?
A. All athletes are guaranteed three workouts. The top 12 women in the Open Division (18+) and the top 12 women in the Masters Division (40+) will face off in the fourth and final event. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.
Q. What if I can’t complete one or more WOD’s as prescribed?
A. If the movements / movement standards are not within your skill set, we will scale so you can compete, but you will not be eligible for the top 12 in the Open or Master’s divisions. Our aim is to make this a fun, well-run and competitive event — even if that competition is you versus you for multiple PRs.
Q. What suggestions might you have to help me prepare for the Athena Classic?
A. Continue to hone skills, train with intensity, and practice your performance fueling. If you’ve never competed before, you will need to find the best mix of calories to keep your energy at optimum levels across three WODs and several hours of competition — that means you need to train your nutrition as much as you train your skill set. There is nothing worse than running out of fuel, or eating something that doesn’t sit well with your digestive tract. As they say in the world of competitive eating, we’re not interested in any “reversals” during the Athena Classic … and we can’t imagine you are, either.
Q. Any hints as to what movements we might expect?
A. Movement standards will be announced prior to Monday, April 8 for workout #1, #2 & #3. Workout #4 will be announced on site. Until then, you would be well served to train with the following in mind: lift something(s) ground-to-overhead, crack off Double Unders, carry heavy objects in a variety of positions, run, row, hoist a barbell, and complete a variety of body weight movements.
