Elite Athletic Development / CrossFit Arlington Heights Athlete Guest Post | John O’

This post is contributed by EAD / CFAH Athlete John O’, who started training with us in November 2011. John’s second WOD after graduating Training Essentials (then known as OnRamp) was the Thanksgiving favorite “Earn Your Seconds,” which he did with his usual flair, and has every year since. You can usually find John O’ training with the early morning crew weekdays and on Saturday mornings. This week John O’ PR’d his Bench Press, and anticipates the same for his Deadlift Saturday. Have a thought or two you’d like to share with your fellow athletes? Let us know … we’d love to hear from you!

Door

Has life intervened and disrupted your training routine? EAD / CFAH Athlete John O’ says stop thinking about it and just come back.

I have been an active member of Elite Athletic Development | Crossfit Arlington Heights for more than two years and I have met many amazing people. I love how many people I recognize and run into around town who I first met at EAD | CFAH.  When I run into someone I haven’t seen for a while, the inevitable question arises, “Are you still going to CrossFit?” I say quickly “Yes”, and then ask them the same question. If the person says “no”, it is almost always quickly followed by, “I would like to, but I’m nervous to start up again.” If you’ve said those words before, or you know someone who has, this post is for you.

Everyone has a lot going on these days; work, kids, travel, injury, and more get in the way of our ideal training plans. When your program gets disrupted, I encourage you to come back to EAD | CFAH and start up again as soon as you can. Stop thinking about it and just come to one class. Is it going to be awesome? Probably not. You have to get your body adjusted to the new regimen. But I promise you that everything will come back quicker than before and you will be happy you started up again.

JohnODropQuoteLast summer I was unable to come to any classes due to eye surgery. Coming back was the scariest and most nerve-wracking thing I have experienced in a long time. Typical thoughts were that I was going to be embarrassed by being so slow, being last, being fat, throwing up, struggling mightily, etc. Stop thinking and just come back for one class, and follow these three rules as first told to me by Coach Rory.

1.  Show Up. 90 percent of accomplishing anything is putting yourself in a position to succeed. At EAD | CFAH, just show up. The coaches will take care of you.

2.  Do What You Can Do. CrossFit is about challenging yourself and your self-imposed limits. The EAD | CFAH coaches are not interested in having you hurt yourself or attempt things you are not ready for. What they are looking for is a desire to get better and an honest, all-out effort. Do what you can do by easing into the different exercises and weights. The EAD | CFAH Community will support you, challenge you, and congratulate you.

3.  Keep Coming Back. We did not get out of shape overnight, so why would getting back into shape be any different? It’s a process that gets you better each and every time you come back.

I’ve yet to find my name at the top of the whiteboard for finishing a workout first in the two years since I’ve done CrossFit, so I know what it feels like to struggle (and seemingly survive) some of the classes. But I always feel that the coaches have my back. They are always supportive and will modify any workout you don’t feel you can complete safely. I have also come to appreciate the amazing support of the EAD | CFAH Community. As a struggling and novice CrossFit athlete, I can always count on my classmates to cheer me on to the finish and congratulate me. It’s all about the process of improvement and getting better so why not have a crowd of positive, energetic and great people encourage you? Come back to Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights and let us cheer you on.

January Olympic Lifting Seminar Athletes Post Significant Gains.

Submitted by Coach Alida. Train with Alida in one of the following classes based at Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights:
> Monday, 5:30 a.m. & 6:30 p.m., CrossFit
> Wednesday, 5:30 a.m., CrossFit
> Saturday, 7 a.m., Olympic Lifting Seminar

Register Today for the March 15 – April 5, 7 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Olympic Lifting Seminar

The Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights January Olympic Lifting Seminar concluded Saturday, and the results were fantastic! The six athletes who participated worked hard on cleaning up their technique and can now approach the Olympic Lifts with much greaterconfidence. On the final Saturday, the athletes maxed out on the Snatch and Clean & Jerk and we saw new PRs and high percentage lifts being hit with much better technique.

Registration is now open for the March 15 - April 5 Olympic Lifting Seminar. Space is limited ... register today.

Registration is now open for the March 15 – April 5 Olympic Lifting Seminar. Space is limited … register today.

If you are in class with Steve S., Tim F., Talya, Bob D., Jim T. or Juan you may notice their improved technique, or you may see their new PRs being added to the Wall of Fame and wonder “Is this Olympic Lifting Seminar for me?” The answer is a resounding yes! The Olympic Lifting seminar is designed to help athletes of all levels, from those who are fresh out of Training Essentials, to those who have been training for a few years and would like to take an in-depth look at their technique in order to add pounds to their 1RM, or increase efficiency while doing the lifts in WODs.

The seminar is a four-week commitment and is designed to take you back to the basics, and build a solid technique foundation before adding weight. There is a strong focus on positioning and making sure you understand where your body should be in relation to the bar during each phase of the lifts.

During the first week, the focus is solely on the Snatch. Athletes will be lead through a series of exercises with an empty bar or PVC learning the “double knee bend” technique, the method that is taught at all USA Weightlifting seminars, and is employed by nearly every competitive Olympic Lifter. During the second session, the focus shifts to learning the technique for the Clean & Jerk. Once again, the athletes will move through the exercises with an empty bar or PVC, to make sure they are concentrating on technique and not the weight. At the end of these two sessions, athletes will perform a series of strength building assistance exercises that reinforce the positioning that was just taught. The third session continues the focus on assistance lifts. The assistance lifts can be used to focus in on specific weaknesses and help to build strength during the pull or catch phases of the lifts. The final Saturday is max out day! Athletes will be given the opportunity to test their improved skills, and shoot for a new PR or the ability to hit their old PR with confidence and perfect technique.

Still have questions? Talk to Coach Alida to discuss how the Olympic Lifting Seminar will support your training goals. The seminar is run on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. -8:30 a.m., and is limited to six athletes.

Alida Bray started her training at EAD / CFAH in one of the very first Fitness Boot Camp classes. She soon transitioned to CrossFit, where she quickly feel in love with the barbell and is now a seasoned Olympic Lifting. Alida is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Concept 2 Certified Indoor Rowing Instructor, USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sports Performance Coach, and a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer.

2015 Rx Masters Division Podium Finishers. Thadine Zajac, CrossFit Roselle, 2nd place; Jennifer Benson, Big City CrossFit, 2015 Champion; Jodi Corbit, CrossFit Sanctify, 3rd place.

2014 Masters Division runner-up Jennifer Benson, 41, Big City CrossFit, Chicago, set her sights on denying two-time champ Liza Michelle, CrossFit Carbon, Vernon Hills, a three-peat. Benson dominated the 2015 competition with four first place finishes. Second place finisher Thadine Zajac, 42, CrossFit Roselle, denied Benson a sweep by matching her points total in Workout #2 | “For Malaika.” The workout honored EAD | CFAH athlete Malaika Corsentino who succumbed to brain cancer April 16, just two years after competing in the inaugural Athena Classic. Rounding out the Masters Division was Jodi Corbit, 41, CrossFit Sanctify, Madison, Wis., in third, and Tammy Whaley, 42, A3 CrossFit, Grayslake, and Lesley Ravenscroft, 45, CrossFit Carbon, who tied for fourth. Michelle, fighting a nagging injury, went in to the finals in fourth place, and within striking distance of the podium, but opted not to compete in the final event of the day. Joining Wall on the podium was second place finisher Mary Jo Prusko, 39, Bare Bones CrossFit, Yorkville, and Rachel Druschel, 32, CrossFit Carbon. Scaled Division Leaderboard.

2015 Rx Division Podium Finishers. Meghan Carney, CrossFit Carbon, 2nd place; 2015 Champion, Ashley Carlson, CrossFit Kilter; Ashley Sisovsky, CrossFit Kilter, 3rd place.

A pair of Ashley’s from CrossFit Kilter, Libertyville — Carlson, 32, and Sisovsky, 28 — battled throughout the day, along with Meghan Carney, 26, CrossFit Carbon. Carlson crushed the final workout, topping the field by more than a minute, to cinch the Rx Division championship. A second place finish by Sisovsky in the final workout of the day wasn’t enough to hold off Carney, who captured division runner up honors. Sisovsky finished third. Rx Division Leaderboard.

In a day filled with stellar athletic performances, a series of most memorable moments came from Master’s Division athlete Jodi Marino, 60, CrossFit Sanctify, Madison, and Regina Pinkston,35, CrossFit Arlington Heights. An accident left Marino with exceptionally limited use of her arm – but full access to her competitive spirit and drive. Pinkston has lot close to 100 pounds since starting CrossFit in January, 2013. The Athena Classic was her first competition, and she’s now registered for the August 8 Tandem Throwdown, also hosted by Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights.

August 9, 2015 | Tandem Throwdown Crowns 2015 Champs. Tandem Throwdown organizers had no idea when they named the final workout of the 2015 event “Better Together” that the moniker would set the stage for the thisclose scoring between the top duos throughout the day, including the need to invoke two separate tiebreakers. The 2015 Tandem Throwdown Open Division title was up for grabs as 2013 champs Vanessa Stack, CrossFit Muse & Michael Bodi, CrossFit Phoenix, held just a single point lead after three workouts over Ashley Carlson, CrossFit 155 & Ryan Poole, CrossFit Kilter. Poole & Carlson bested Stack & Bodi on the final workout, a grueling 10-minute pyramid featuring Handstand Push Ups, Bar Muscle Ups and two sets of Squat Snatch (85# / 115#). With the leaderboard deadlocked at six, the final workout victory clinched the 2015 title for Poole & Carlson. The Tandem Throwdown victory was the second title earned by Carlson at Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights this year; she was crowned Athena Classic champ April 18.

2015 Tandem Throwdown Podium Finishers: Michael Bodi, CrossFit Phoenix & Vanessa Stack, CrossFit Muse (2nd); Ashley Carlson, CrossFit 155 & Ryan Poole, CrossFit Kilter (Open Division Champs); Thadine Zajac & Jason Rice, CrossFit Roselle (Masters Division Champs); Reid Specht & Maggie Kerrigan, CrossFit Dinami.

2015 Tandem Throwdown Podium Finishers: Michael Bodi, CrossFit Phoenix & Vanessa Stack, CrossFit Muse (2nd); Ryan Poole, CrossFit Kilter & Ashley Carlson, CrossFit 155 (Open Division Champs); Thadine Zajac & Jason Rice, CrossFit Roselle (Masters Division Champs); Reid Specht & Maggie Kerrigan, CrossFit Dinami. Check out the event photo album on the EAD | CFAH Facebook Page.

2015 Tandem-159-2

Competitors gave it their all during a day filled with challenge, camaraderie and fun.

Joining Stack & Bodi and Carlson & Poole in the finals were six duos who consistently placed in the top 10 on the leaderboard throughout the day: Maggie Kerrigan & Reid Specht (3rd), CrossFit Dinami; Kalah Blue & Brian Kent (4th), CrossFit Wauconda; Kinsy Rosati & Clark Dendinger (5th), CrossFit Fire; Kate Konkel & Pat Scanlan (6th), Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights; 2014 Tandem Throwdown champs Christina Meeks & Trent Meeks (7th), Unaffiliated. The early departure by the one of duos tied for 6th place after three workouts, Skyler Bahrke & Jesse Bahrke, CrossFit Wauconda, (family function), invoked a tiebreaker ruling between 2014 Masters Division champ Thadine Zajac and her new partner, Jason Rice, CrossFit Roselle, and Jacqie Seyller & Andy Rodriguez, CrossFit Mettle and Honor & CrossFit Oswego. Zajac & Rice went on to top the Masters Division. Rounding out the Masters Division were Jody Corbit & Justin Corbit, CrossFit Sanctify; Courtney Fedacsek & Glenn Backus, CrossFit Autonomy; Nicole Herchenbach & John Allen, CrossFit Fire; Bill Miller & Amber Rich, Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights; Laura Martin & Scott Beutler, CrossFit SAA; Dara Madrid & Marco Fernandez, CrossFit SAA; Ann Marie Nordby & Todd Nordby, Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights; Lisa Lowenthal & Terry Barlin, CrossFit Autonomy; . Full leaderboard results are posted at WODLeader.

2015 Tandem-345

Workout #1 | Back in Shackles put communication, coordination and grit to the test..

“Back in Shackles,” a workout inspired by the first workout of the 2013 Tandem Throwdown, was met with enthusiasm – and a bit of bemusement – by competitors. Tandems had to complete he 10-minute AMRAP bound at the wrist. The workout featured 30 Overhead Plate Lunges, 30 Unanchored Sit Ups and 30 Single Unders, kicked off by a 250m Plate Run (45# / 25#) buy-in. The workout launched what would become a fairly consistent leaderboard for the day; eight of the top 10 finishers in Workout #1 would go on to the finals.

Perhaps the loudest cheers of the day rumbled through the gym during Workout #2 | Kong. Tandems had a single barbell and 45 seconds for the female to complete a Deadlift and the male a Clean (any style). Ana Grimh & Tyler Grimh, CrossFit Sanctify, were the first to complete the 10-station ladder (135# – 305#). They were soon followed by Blue & Kent, Meeks & Meeks, Rosati & Dendinger, Stack & Bodi, Carlson & Poole, and Kerrigan & Specht. Workout #3 | Hold On – 100 Shoulder-to-Overhead (95# / 65#), 90 Bar Hop Burpees, 80 Front Squats, and a 70 kcal Row paired either a Front Rack or Extended Arm Hang static barbell holds – showcased the athleticism of Bodi & Stack who logged an blistering finish time of 11:35. The Tandem Throwdown returns to Elite Athletic Development | CrossFit Arlington Heights Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016. AUGUST 13, 2013 UPDATE. Thanks to EAD / CFAH athlete Monica S for producing a HIGHLIGHT REEL of the CrossFit Arlington Heights 2013 Tandem Throwdown. Thanks, too, to everyone who helped make the 2013 Tandem Throwdown possible. It was a day filled with competition, camaraderie and CrossFit, and happened only because of the time, talent and contributions of many, including: the EAD / CFAH Performance Coaches — Jim, Karen, Josh, Becky, Kristen, Alida, Ashley, Mike Ku & Kate; the judges & volunteers — Melissa W, Dave H, Kurt Mc, Heather C, Mike Mu, Mike Ko, Maggie, Kim B, Andrea P, Andrea V, Keith C, Phil P, Ida, Nadya, John S, Theresa L, anyone who pitched in along the way, and anyone we’ve inadvertently left of the list; the folks who contributed to the Team Malaika fund; and, of course, the unbelievably bad ass athletes and the hundreds of spectators who came to cheer them on.

AUGUST 11, 2013 UPDATE #3. Save the Date! The Tandem Throwdown returns Saturday, Aug. 9. 2014. While you’re saving dates, be sure to reserve Saturday, April 19, 2014 for the return of the Athena Classic all-women’s competition. Both events sold out, so be sure to register early.

AUGUST 11, 2013 UPDATE #2. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Team Malaika Fund. We raised several hundred dollars to support EAD / CFAH athlete Malaika as she undergoes treatment for brain cancer.

AUGUST 11, 2013 UPDATE #1. Eighty competitors. Forty teams. Three grueling qualifying workouts steeped in teamwork, strategy, strength and muscular endurance. Congrats to the athletes who gave it all, and then game some more during the 2013 Tandem Throwdown. Click to view the 2013 Tandem Throwdown Leader Board l Final.

AUGUST 8, 2013 Update. Weight progression for Workout #2 / Ground-to-Overhead Ladder have been announced:

MEN

135# – 155# – 175# – 195# – 215# – 235# – 255# – 275# – 295# – 315# + 20 second AMRAP

WOMEN

95# – 110# – 125# – 140# – 155# – 165# – 175# – 185# – 195# – 205# + 20 second AMRAP

Competitors will have 20 seconds to clear the weight according to event movement standards, and then 10 seconds to transition to the next weight. Competitors who reach the final weight — 315# for men and 205# for women — will have 20 seconds to complete as many lifts as possible. Each lift completed during the AMRAP will add 10# to the overall women’s weight (three additional lifts completed = 235# final weight) and 20# to the overall men’s weight (tw0 additional lifts completed = 355#). The recorded score for Workout #2 will be the combined total weight of the Tandem, which in the case of our example would be 590#.

AUGUST 7, 2013 Update. The time cap for Workout #1 / “Shackles” will be 17 minutes. Remember, the last movement in Workout #1 is AMRAP Partner Burpees.

AUGUST 6, 2013 Update. Following please find the most frequently asked questions about the 2013 Tandem Throwdown Movement Standards as of today. The FAQ will be updated should other questions surface.

Q. Can we decide who rows first and runs first for Workout #3 / Run – Row? Will we each have our own rower and two row 2000m?
A. Yes. Each Tandem will decide which partner will run first and which will row first. It is important to note that one member of the Tandem is either always running or rowing until you each partner completes the 1600m run. Once both members of the Tandem have completed a 1600m run, the partners can decide how to handle the remaining portion of the row, assuming there is any distance yet to cover. Each Tandem shares a rower to accumulate the 4000m.

Q. Will we each have our own rower and to row 2000m in Workout #3 / Run – Row? A. No. Each Tandem shares a single rower to accumulate the 4000m.

Q. Will partners take turns to complete movements during Workout #1 / Shackles? A. No. You & your partner will be shackled at the wrist for the entirety of Workout #1 / Shackles. Everything you do will be together and in unison.

Q. Can the man carry the woman the entire way for the Workout #1 / Shackles 250m Partner Carry? A. No. The woman is required to carry the man for at least 1/3 of the course. The course will be divided in roughly three segments and Tandems can decide when to make the switch, as long as it is within one of the designated areas. Q. Are we required to hold the DB for both Thrusters and OH Lunges in the shackled or non-shackled hand during Workout #1 / Shackles? A. Both members of the Tandem are required to hold the DB for the Thrusters in the non-shackled hand. Tandem members have the option to hold the DB in either the shackled or non-shackled hand, or both hands if desired, for the OH Lunge Steps.

AUGUST 5, 2013 Update. Elite Athletic Development / CrossFit Arlington Heights today announced that the 2013 Tandem Throwdown official community outreach initiative will benefit Team Malaika. EAD / CFAH athlete Malaika was diagnosed with brain cancer shortly after competing in the 2013 Athena Classic in late April. She recently completed radiation treatment and continues to undergo chemotherapy. Regardless of your financial situation or how well you think you’ve planned, cancer treatment is expensive. Please help us help Malaika, her husband and fellow EAD / CFAH athlete John C, and their three children ages 3, 5 & 7 by donating August 10. Look for the Team Malaika donation jug. Thanks in advance for your support!
